Anodising is the process used for producing a translucent film of aluminium oxide which forms an integral part of aluminium. This is produced by applying direct current through a suitable electrolyte (dilute sulphuric acid) in which the aluminium is the anode and a suitable material e.g. (lead) is the cathode. Anodising is a very thin coating of immense hardness measured in microns. Higher micron levels are needed to produce stronger colours, and extra processes produce a polished finish. It is much more expensive to produce anodised pipe of higher micron levels, and we use this more vibrantly coloured and finished pipe for our deluxe range of wind chimes.
